Guide Dogs for the Blind
Back to Charities We Support
Guide Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit, charitable organization with a mission to provide Guide Dogs and training in their use to visually impaired people throughout the United States and Canada. Our dogs and services are free to those we serve, thanks to the generosity of donors and support of volunteers. We are devoted to promoting the human/animal bond. Our two training facilities are in San Rafael, California—20 miles north of San Francisco, and in Boring, Oregon—25 miles east of Portland; we have puppy raisers throughout the Western states. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site, and come back often for news and updates. Our schools accept visually impaired students from throughout the United States and Canada for training with a Guide Dog. We provide transportation, room and board, the costs of training and all of our other services completely free of charge, and we are supported entirely by private donations. Students have access to instructors, counselors and veterinarians, a full-time nursing staff, a dedicated dormitory staff and people who attend to students' needs in order to make their stay pleasant and enjoyable. Our schools are unique in that we offer follow-up services to each graduate of our program at their home or place of business for the lifespan of their dog. We also offer accelerated training for qualified students returning to our school for successor dogs. That's why ours has been the school of choice for so many people who use dogs as guides. We are proud to have provided more than 10,000 dogs to people with vision loss since 1942. As we continue to improve and expand our services, we invite you to share with us in our exciting mission to provide a means of safe, convenient travel: the best dogs, the best training, and the best services available in the United States today.
Guide Dogs for the Blind has received 3 stars from www.CharityNavigator.org.
