How to train your dog to lay down

Do you know how to train your dog to lay down?

By: Duniasha

There are different ways of how to train your dog to lay down. Depending on a size, breed and/or an age, you can choose the one which is more appropriate specifically to your dog.

The traditional method of teaching the down command requires you to physically assist the dog into the correct position. Use this method only with puppies. The modified traditional method is preferred to all dogs, especially the large adults.

Some dogs with an active defence reflex may not like to exercise in submission and become aggressive if you try to physically force them into the down position. It may trigger their defence reflexes and/or aggression. Unfortunately, your face will be near the dog's primary weapon - it's teeth.
How to train your dog to lay down and avoid this dangerous situation?

In the modified traditional method, you lure the dog into the position with a treat. As simple as this: if you're luring a dog and it doesn't go down, you withhold the treat, which doesn't risk activating any defence mechanism or aggression.
Follow these steps:
- Get the dog into the sit position by your left side.
- Get a treat in your right hand. Hold it against the palm of your hand with your thumb.
- Move the treat toward the dog's nose, but don't give it.
- Slowly move your hand down with your palm facing ground. Keep your hand near the dog's nose as you move it downward. The dog's nose will follow the treat down to the ground. Remember, wherever a dog's head goes, its body follows. Don't make the mistake of pulling the treat out in front of the dog, which makes it get up and go forward, not lie down on the ground.
If the dog is having a hard time to get into the correct position, gently press down the index finger of your left hand between the dog's shoulder blades. Don't try to force it, press just hard enough to help the dog to understand what will get it the treat. The moment the dog is down, turn your hand over and give it a treat. Pet the dog and say, "Good, Sam, down!"
- Repeat the exercise few times, and then release the dog with the command "Free!"
